Hello and Goodbye to Summer

Summer is not my season. It’s humid and hot. I hate shaving my legs. My toes do not look cute no matter how many pedicures I get. I am one of those people who instead of getting normal mosquito bites I get those awful blisters that scar even if you don’t itch them. Summertime is just not for me. In contrast, my wonderful partner is essentially a lizard. He is perfectly content to lay out in the hot sun for hours and slowly roast in a meditative trance. It’s honestly amazing to watch. I have tried to be that person. I want to be that person.

I am not that person.

Usually by the time Labor Day comes around I am absolutely over summer. I am ready for sweaters and hot chai and being able to open my windows to smell the fresh, crisp air. I love the colors and listening to the crickets and cool mornings reading on my porch. I love watching the days get shorter and being able to spend more time outside with my dogs. More than anything I love that it’s a socially acceptable time of year to watch back to back horror movies and no one can judge me for it.

This year, however, it was a busier summer than most. I’ve been writing a book and a novella simultaneously. I launched a copywriting and editing business. I launched an instagram, a facebook, a patreon, a website and a newsletter. I’m still working my full-time job. Most days I finish work, cook dinner and then hop back onto the computer for (different) work. That means that essentially for the last five months I’ve functionally disappeared from the face of the earth. I spend most of my time at my computer writing or googling how many pens need to be sacrificed to the KDP gods before an ebook can go live.

Luckily, I have a very kind friend who agreed to let me sneak into her backyard for a few hours over the weekend to lounge in their pool. I made a picnic lunch and ate it poolside and then floated in the water under a gorgeous sunny sky. I dove into a book that’s been in my “To Be Read” pile for ages (The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna). It was the perfect little break that gave me the energy to head home and finally  put the finishing touches on the second draft of The Light Keeper so I could send it out to the advanced reading team.

So even though my glimpse of summer was short, I have to admit it was lovely.

That said, bring on spooky season!
